Enceladus – Saturn’s Ocean Moon
Water vapour geysers erupt from Enceladus’s south pole. Cassini detected organic molecules and hydrogen in the plumes — signs of a potentially habitable subsurface ocean.
Enceladus is a small icy moon of Saturn that has become one of the most exciting targets in the search for life. Unlike Europa, Enceladus actively vents material from its interior into space, giving scientists a direct sample of its subsurface ocean.
The Plumes
Near the south pole, long fractures known as “tiger stripes” release jets of water vapour, ice particles, and gases. The Cassini spacecraft flew through these plumes multiple times and analysed their composition.

A Habitable Environment?

Next Steps
Future missions could sample the plumes more precisely or even land near the vents. Enceladus offers a rare opportunity: a subsurface ocean that is naturally delivering material to space for analysis.
