Europa – Jupiter’s Ocean Moon
A global ocean of liquid water lies beneath Europa’s icy crust — possibly containing more water than all of Earth’s oceans combined.
Europa is one of Jupiter’s largest moons and one of the most promising places in the Solar System to search for extraterrestrial life. Its surface is a shell of ice, but strong evidence indicates a deep liquid water ocean underneath.
The Subsurface Ocean
Tidal forces from Jupiter flex Europa’s interior, generating heat that keeps a global ocean liquid. The ice crust may be several to tens of kilometres thick, with an ocean that could be 100 kilometres deep or more. This ocean is likely in contact with a rocky seafloor, creating conditions that on Earth support life around hydrothermal vents.

Future Exploration
