Fluoride in Drinking Water
Fluoride is a naturally occurring ion in many rocks and soils. In several parts of India it dissolves into groundwater at levels high enough to affect teeth and, over years, bones. It is one of the most important drinking-water parameters that a cheap TDS meter cannot see.
Direct answer
A small amount of fluoride in water can help reduce tooth decay. Higher long-term intake can cause dental fluorosis (mottled or pitted enamel) and, at still higher exposure, skeletal fluorosis. Indian drinking-water standard IS 10500 lists fluoride with an acceptable limit of 1.0 mg/L and a permissible limit of 1.5 mg/L in the absence of an alternate source. The only reliable way to know your well or village supply is a laboratory test for fluoride — not taste and not TDS.
Where high fluoride comes from
Most high-fluoride water in India is geogenic: fluoride-bearing minerals in the aquifer, not a factory next door. Hot, dry regions with long groundwater residence times are more likely to be affected. Documented problem areas have included parts of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and other states. Levels can differ between two neighbouring wells.
Surface water is often lower in fluoride than deep groundwater in the same district — but surface water has its own microbial risks. Tanker water quality depends entirely on the source that was filled.
Health context, without panic
- Dental fluorosis appears in children while teeth are forming. White streaks or brown staining later cannot be “washed off.”
- Skeletal fluorosis is a long-term, high-exposure problem: joint pain and bone changes. It is diagnosed by clinicians, not by a home kit alone.
- Tea, some foods, and toothpaste also contribute fluoride. Water is often the largest extra source in endemic villages.
- Low fluoride is not an emergency in itself; many cities have low-fluoride surface supplies and use toothpaste for dental protection.
Testing: what works and what does not
A TDS meter measures conductivity. Fluoride can be high in water that is not especially “salty,” and low in water with high hardness. You need a specific fluoride method (ion-selective electrode or a certified lab method). Field kits exist for screening; confirm important decisions with a recognised laboratory.
Test after any change of source, new borewell, or if children in the house show enamel mottling. Include fluoride in a basic private-well panel along with nitrate, bacteria, and hardness when you first commission a new source.

Treatment options in principle
If a lab result is above the local limit, households and communities use a mix of approaches:
- Switch to a safer alternative source when one exists (piped treated surface water, a tested well, or a community plant)
- Reverse osmosis, which typically reduces fluoride along with other dissolved ions — then check product water, because rejection is not always 100%
- Community defluoridation plants (activated alumina and similar media) that need correct operation and media replacement
- Not: boiling. Boiling does not remove fluoride and can slightly concentrate it

How to use this article
If you live in a known fluoride-affected district, treat testing as part of household water literacy, the same way you would treat a tanker bill or a monsoon tank clean. Do not diagnose fluorosis from the internet. Do not assume bottled water or an RO advertisement has solved the problem unless the product water has been checked.
Keep a written record of lab results and dates. When you change filters or membranes, re-test product water if fluoride was the original concern.
