Key Facts About Water

~71%
of Earth's surface is covered by water, mostly oceans.
~2.5%
of all water is freshwater; much of that is locked in ice.
104.5°
bond angle in the H₂O molecule — key to polarity and life.
~70%
of global freshwater withdrawals go to agriculture.
H₂O
expands when it freezes — ice floats, protecting aquatic life.
Cycle
The same water has circulated for billions of years via the water cycle.

Greywater
Gently used household water from showers, sinks, and laundry (not toilet waste).
Hydrological cycle
Continuous movement of water through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and runoff.
Reverse osmosis
Purification process that forces water through a membrane, rejecting many dissolved salts and contaminants.
Water footprint
Total freshwater used to produce goods and services, including “virtual water” in trade.
Watershed / basin
Land area that drains all rainfall and streams to a common outlet such as a river or lake.
ZLD
Zero Liquid Discharge — industrial approach that recycles wastewater so little or no liquid effluent is released.
