Lakes Powell and Mead Hit New Record Lows
In August 2026 the two largest reservoirs in the United States — Lake Powell and Lake Mead on the Colorado River system — reached their lowest recorded water levels. Combined storage is the smallest since the mid-1950s, before Lake Powell was filled.
Why these reservoirs matter
Lake Mead (behind Hoover Dam) and Lake Powell (behind Glen Canyon Dam) store water for cities and farms across Arizona, Nevada, California, and other Colorado River basin states, and support hydropower. Roughly 40 million people and large irrigation districts depend on the river’s managed flow.
What is driving the decline
- More than two decades of below-average runoff and higher temperatures (often called aridification)
- Average natural flow in the 21st century about 16–20% lower than the 20th-century average used in older allocations
- Legal allocations that together exceed reliable supply in dry years
- Heavy agricultural use, which remains the largest sectoral demand
Practical stakes
As levels fall, operators face tighter releases, possible power-generation limits at Glen Canyon Dam, and harder trade-offs between cities and farms. States and the federal government continue to negotiate shorter- and longer-term operating rules. Desalination trades, demand cuts, and efficiency projects are part of the policy debate, but none instantly refill the reservoirs.
