What Is Greywater and How Can It Be Reused Safely?
Greywater is gently used household water — a resource for plants when handled with care, not a substitute for drinking water.
Greywater (also spelled gray water) is wastewater from showers, bathroom sinks, and clothes washers. It does not include toilet waste (blackwater) or, in many definitions, kitchen sink water that carries food grease and pathogens. Reusing greywater can cut outdoor freshwater demand.
What is usually allowed for reuse
- Subsurface irrigation of ornamental plants and trees
- Some systems for toilet flushing after treatment (jurisdiction-dependent)
- Not for drinking, cooking, or bathing
Safety rules of thumb
- Use plant-friendly soaps; avoid strong disinfectants and solvents in lines that feed plants
- Do not store untreated greywater long — bacteria multiply
- Keep greywater below the surface when irrigating to reduce contact and odours
- Never connect greywater to the potable plumbing without approved backflow protection

Simple systems divert laundry rinse water to mulch basins. More advanced systems filter and disinfect for broader reuse. Greywater vs rainwater vs blackwater
Rainwater is relatively clean precipitation. Greywater has soaps and some microbes. Blackwater has high pathogen loads from toilets. Mixing them changes treatment needs completely.
