How to Reduce Lead in Drinking Water
Lead in drinking water usually comes from plumbing materials — and reducing it means testing, treatment, and safer materials.
Lead is not added to water at modern treatment plants in normal practice. It mostly enters drinking water when water contacts lead pipes, lead solder, or brass fixtures that contain lead. Reducing exposure combines testing, flushing, certified treatment, and plumbing upgrades.
Where lead comes from
- Lead service lines between the main and the house (in some older cities)
- Lead solder on copper pipes (older construction)
- Some brass faucets and fittings
Corrosive water can pull more lead from these materials. Utilities sometimes adjust chemistry to reduce corrosion.
What helps reduce lead
- Testing — First-draw and flushed samples show whether lead is present
- Flushing — Running cold water after stagnation can lower lead in some cases (not a permanent fix)
- Certified filters — Look for standards aimed at lead reduction (for example NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for relevant devices). Pitcher, faucet, and under-sink options differ in capacity
- RO systems — Reverse osmosis can substantially reduce lead when maintained
- Replacing lead sources — Replacing lead service lines and problematic fixtures is the durable solution
What does not reliably remove lead
Boiling does not remove lead; it can concentrate it. Ordinary carbon filters only help if specifically certified for lead. Softeners are for hardness minerals, not a lead solution by themselves.
Public systems and industry practice
Cities with lead service lines run corrosion control and replacement programs. Point-of-use RO and certified lead-reduction filters are widely used in homes and some schools as interim protection while infrastructure is upgraded.
