Reverse Osmosis vs Distilled Water
Two common ways to produce highly purified water — compared by process, not by brand.
Reverse osmosis and distillation both produce much cleaner water than typical tap water, but they work differently. RO pushes water through a membrane. Distillation boils water and condenses the steam, leaving most contaminants behind.
How distillation works
Water is heated to steam. Steam rises and is cooled back into liquid in a separate chamber. Most dissolved salts, metals, and many non-volatile contaminants stay in the boiling chamber. Volatile chemicals with boiling points near water may need extra design (vents, carbon) to control.
How RO compares
RO uses pressure and a membrane instead of boiling. It generally uses less energy at household scale than boiling-based distillation, produces water continuously into a tank, and rejects a concentrate stream. Distillers are slower per batch and use heat.
Minerals and taste
Both methods remove most dissolved minerals. Some people prefer remineralization for taste. Neither process is about “adding healthy minerals” as a medical treatment — mineral intake mainly comes from food.
Which technology fits which need?
- Home drinking water, ongoing use: RO systems are widely used under sinks for daily purified water
- Laboratory / some medical device contexts: Distilled or otherwise highly purified water is specified by standards
- Emergency or small batch: Distillation concepts appear in some portable designs; boiling alone is mainly for microbes, not salts
Industries that need ultrapure water (semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals) often combine RO, ion exchange, and other steps — not a single consumer filter.
“Best” depends on the contaminant of concern, energy, wastewater, and maintenance — test source water and match the process.
