How Much Water Do Data Centres Use?
Servers make heat. Many large sites use water to reject that heat. The amount depends on climate, cooling design, and whether water is withdrawn, consumed, or reused.
Direct answer
A data centre’s water use is mostly for cooling, not for “drinking by computers.” Evaporative cooling can use large volumes in hot, dry weather. Air-cooled or liquid-to-chip systems can use far less site water but may use more electricity. Published figures vary widely (litres per megawatt-hour). Treat any single viral number as incomplete without climate and cooling type.
Where the water goes
- Evaporative cooling towers — water is consumed as vapour
- Closed loops — mostly recirculation; makeup water for leaks and blowdown
- Air cooling — little on-site water; heat still has to go somewhere

Why location matters
The same cooling design is a different problem in a water-stressed basin than next to a cool, wet coast. India and the western United States have both seen debate about new compute in dry regions. That is a planning issue (where to build, which cooling to require), not a reason to ignore household water hygiene.
Compared with other users
Globally, agriculture still withdraws far more freshwater than data centres. Cities and thermal power also sit above digital infrastructure in most national accounts.
