What Causes Hard Water?

Hard water is not “dirty water.” It is water that has dissolved rock minerals — mainly calcium and magnesium.

Water gets hard when rain or river water soaks through limestone, chalk, dolomite, or gypsum and dissolves calcium and magnesium. Groundwater in those regions is often harder than rain or mountain surface water. Boiling can drop temporary hardness (bicarbonate) as scale; permanent hardness from sulfates and chlorides stays unless you soften or use RO.

How the chemistry happens

Carbon dioxide in soil and rain makes a weak carbonic acid. That acid dissolves calcium carbonate in rock. The ions stay in solution — they do not make the water look cloudy. That is why a glass of hard water can look perfectly clear.
