What Is Turbidity in Water?
Turbidity is how cloudy or hazy water looks because of tiny particles suspended in it — and it is one of the most watched indicators in drinking-water treatment.
Turbidity measures how much suspended material scatters light in water. Higher turbidity means the water looks cloudier. Those particles can be clay, silt, fine organic matter, microorganisms, or chemical precipitates. Turbidity is usually reported in NTU (nephelometric turbidity units).
Why turbidity matters for drinking water
Particles that cause turbidity can shelter bacteria and viruses from disinfectants such as chlorine. That is why utilities treat and monitor turbidity carefully: lower turbidity generally makes disinfection more reliable. Clear-looking water is not automatically safe, but persistently cloudy water from a treated supply is a signal to investigate.

- Heavy rain washing soil into rivers and reservoirs
- Algae blooms in lakes
- Disturbance of sediments in pipes or wells
- Incomplete treatment or filter breakthrough at a plant

How treatment plants reduce turbidity
Typical steps include coagulation and flocculation (chemicals help particles clump), sedimentation, and filtration. Membrane systems and careful filter operation keep finished-water turbidity very low. Many regulations set strict limits on turbidity leaving the plant because it is a practical proxy for treatment performance.
Turbidity vs colour vs dissolved solids
Turbidity is about suspended particles that scatter light. True colour often comes from dissolved organic compounds. Dissolved salts affect taste and conductivity but may not make water look cloudy. A glass can be crystal clear and still contain dissolved contaminants — or look slightly hazy with mostly harmless mineral particles. Testing answers what the eye cannot.
What households should know
Sudden cloudiness from a tap can be air bubbles (they clear from the bottom up) or sediment from plumbing work. If cloudiness persists, smells bad, or follows a boil-water advisory in your area, follow public-health guidance and contact the supplier. Point-of-use filters rated for particulate reduction can help with some aesthetic issues but are not a substitute for addressing a contaminated source.
Turbidity is a visibility and treatment indicator — useful, measurable, and central to safe water engineering, but not the only test that matters.
